Intensive Care Unit (ICU) delirium is common manifestation of acute brain dysfunction seen in critically ill patients, observed in adults, more intensely seen in older age group. ICU delirium is serious consequences in terms of morbidity, mortality, and increased health care costs. An extensive literature review showed that ICU delirium is not well understood and recognized by nursing profession. The incidence report of delirium in ICU is extensive which varied from 20%to 80% depending on the severity of illness. The goal of the study was to define the level of knowledge among critical care nurses and assessing their skills in identifying delirium as early as possible for patient's better treatment and outcome. In this article author has reviewed and analyzed to choose articles published between 2008 and 2014 and obtained 15 articles for the study. Articles review that there is nurse's knowledge deficit in identifying delirium in intensive care unit and other contributing factors include exposure to sedative, analgesic medication and restrains. A total of 20 ICU nurses were included in the study and completed questionnaires prepared by the experts. The questionnaire result identified a need for more delirium specific knowledge and skills to assess and manage the condition more effectively for patient better outcome. Educating nurses, initiating delirium screening once a shift using CAM-ICU, early mobilization and decreasing the used of sedation and restrain can decrease delirium complication and decrease morbidity and mortality rate.
