Abstract : This descriptive, qualitative study used directed content analysis to explore and clarify specific foci of parental stress for mothers of infants with complex congenital heart disease in the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit (PCICU). The PCICU Parental Stress Model was used as the guiding theoretical framework. Three focus groups were conducted with 14 mothers of infants who were being cared for in a PCICU at a large mid-Atlantic children's hospital. Data provided themes to support and refine the PCICU Parental Stress Model that can be used to guide practice, education, and future research in this unique population and setting.
